Rugs are a fantastic addition to your home. However, there are a couple of do's and don'ts to consider when choosing your rug.
Do
Add a rug under furniture - the size of this rug should cover the majority of the furniture! If you're adding it to the dining room, your table AND chairs should fit on the rug. This is a little more complicated for the living room as there are so many configurations, but the general rule of thumb is to have all couch legs and most chair legs on the rug.
Measure your space - leave equal distance on each side of the rug. If this is in the center of the room, aim for spatial equilibrium. So, if there is 1 foot at the top of the rug, then 1 foot at the bottom of the rug.
Research cleaning and know how to treat your rug - once you choose your rug, know how to spot clean and where to get your rug deep cleaned. Accidents happen, and each rug requires different types of care.
Don't
Go too small - this is the biggest mistake people make. While the price of a large rug can be daunting, a too-small rug will leave your room feeling lopsided.
Be afraid of color and pattern - color and patterns add dimension to the room! Especially in 2022, this is a huge trend, so don't shy away from the gorgeous patterned rugs.
Buy it because it's on sale - again, the price of a quality rug that is the size you need can be a pretty penny. However, it's still less than carpeting your entire room! Also, this can leave you with a rug that you eventually grow to hate or that doesn't match your home. So, be patient and find the perfect fit!
